MEDINAH, Ill. – The U.S. Team of Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker defeated the European Team of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell 1 up on Saturday morning in Foursomes at the 39th Ryder Cup.

MATCH FLOW: This was a rematch of a Foursomes that saw the Americans rally from 3 down on the back nine to square the match only to lose when Snedeker’s drive strayed into the trees on the 18th hole and the duo went on to make bogey. This time the U.S. Team made sure there was red on the board throughout the match — winning the first hole and never letting the two Northern Irishmen pull even. That said, McIlroy did come up with a well-time birdie putt — just the second for Europe all day — to get the match back to 1 down at the 16th hole. McDowell fired right at the pin at the 17th but McIlroy missed from 10 feet for birdie and the two halved the 18th with pars.

TIPPING POINT: Furyk drained a confidence-building 12-footer for birdie at the 11th hole that put the Americans 2 up for the second time in the match.

BY THE NUMBERS: The Americans won three holes and shot 3 under. Europe won two holes and shot 2 under with pars on its first 13 holes.

NOTES & QUOTES: Snedeker and Furyk, the 2012 and ’10 FedExCup champions, are 1-1 as a team this week. The two Northern Irishmen are 1-2.

"We got it back to even yesterday, and those guys scrapped hard and the birdie at 16 was incredible and they almost made birdie at 17. I feel fortunate, but we played well, and I’m proud of my partner here. He played like a champ. If there’s anyone on the team now that I want standing over a five-footer that I just ran by the hole or left short, I want this guy over that five-footer, I promise you." — Jim Furyk …

"I got the monkey off my back. Yesterday was kind of hard to take, to give away that half a point on 18 the way I drove it, but when you’ve got a player like Jim, you’re never out of it. Jim played great coming down the stretch yesterday, he played great again today. I can’t tell you how much pressure on those shots coming down the stretch were, and he just flagged it right every time. It’s fun to have a partner like that behind you." — Brandt Snedeker …

"We just sort of plotted our way around the golf course. We made a couple birdies coming in but it just wasn’t enough. We got behind early again and then we tried our hardest to get back into the match." — Rory McIlroy …

"It was hard, you know, very hard to ignore the red on the board. It’s hard to ignore the noise that’s been made around the golf course. We are trying to concentrate on our game and we are trying to get our job done. We just had two sessions in a row now where we made nothing, and consequently, going to lose to great teams."– Graeme McDowell …

"We are in a hole. These guys, there’s blood in the water and they are up for it. They have got a head of steam up and we have got to try and stop it this afternoon." — Graeme McDowell
