Rory McIlroy has what his tennis playing girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki wants — the No. 1 ranking in the world.
"You’re always motivated to get back there,” Wozniacki said in a conference call earlier this week. "And, it always makes us feel better when we know the other one is playing well. For me it’s all about enjoying myself and playing my best tennis. If I do that and win matches, the ranking will come.”
After winning his second major at the PGA Championship in Kiawah Island, S.C., last week, McIlroy was in Cincinnati watching Wozniacki in the Western and Southern Open, where she reached the quarterfinals.
"He likes watching me play and I like to support him,” Wozniacki said.
While in Cincinnati, Rory McIlroy also met tennis superstar Roger Federer. Both are ranked No. 1 in their respective …
McIlroy admittedly stayed up late the weekend of the PGA Championship watching Wozniacki play in Montreal. When Wozniacki wasn’t playing, she was tracking McIlroy’s progress in the final round at The Ocean Course.
"Before he went out there, I told him to enjoy himself and play with a smile on your face all day,” said Wozniacki. "After I won the first set, I heard someone in the crowd yell ‘Rory’s up by five!’ and that was nice to know he was doing well. There was a rain delay so I was able to see the last couple of holes. Of course I texted him ‘Congrats and amazing!’ just before I had to go play again. He played unbelievable, and I’m so proud of him and what he’s achieved. Winning his second major by eight shots is incredible.”
While McIlroy’s primary focus this week was supporting Wozniacki, his competitive nature led him to shooting billiards in the player’s lounge and hitting the tennis courts. He also offered a few golf tips to Novak Djokovic.
"Novak asked when driving if your head is supposed to be behind the ball at impact,” said McIlroy. "I told him, ‘Yeah sort of, but don’t keep your weight on your right side.’ It’s just like a tennis shot. You have to transfer your weight on your left side. I just gave him a little advice before he was going to hit balls.”
But most of the time McIlroy could be found watching Wozniacki play.
"I love watching Caroline play,” McIlroy said. "She’s been great. It’s very nice to have someone who’s so important to me — just to be able to speak to her and ask her a little advice here and there.”
The feeling is clearly mutual.
"He’ll make history for himself," said Wozniacki. "He’s already done something that very few people in the world have done. I think it’s just important to keep focusing on him and not to listen to the comparisons to everyone else."
