NORTON, Mass. – Fueled by a string of six consecutive birdies, Tiger Woods opened with a 7-under 64 in Friday’s first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship.

The score was his second lowest of the year, eclipsed only by the 62 he shot in the final round of the Honda Classic. He walked off the TPC Boston course on Friday leading by one stroke over Jeff Overton, who would soon join Woods at the top of the leaderboard after a  birdie at his final hole.

“I played really well today,” Woods said. “I hit a lot of good shots, and on top of that, I putted well at the same time. It was a nice little combination.”

Woods was bogey-free for his first 17 holes but missed the green with his approach shot at the par-4 ninth (his last hole) for a bogey.

Woods had two birdies in his first seven holes. He then birdied the 18th, starting a string of six consecutive birdies. That’s just one shy of Woods’ personal record of seven consecutive holes under par.

It was a solid ball-striking day for Woods, who hit 16 of 18 greens and 10 of 14 fairways.

“I hit the ball well enough to probably shoot maybe one or two more,” Woods said. “I missed a couple little putts out there. But also I made my share from outside of 15, 20 feet as well.”

Last weekend at The Barclays, Woods three-putted four greens in the third round and then shot 76 in the final round to finish tied for 38th. He dropped from first to third in FedExCup points.

“It wasn’t like I was hitting a lot of awful shots,” Woods said when asked about his one-week turnaround. “I just needed a couple putts to kind of go my way and it didn’t happen. …. Today was about the same as I have been playing pretty much all summer, just go out there and playing pretty consistent.

“It was just a nice, solid round.”
