WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. — Webb Simpson’s final round is under way from The Greenbrier Classic, where he just parred the opening hole to maintain his two-shot lead.

In the short, two-year history of this tournament, neither third-round leader was able to hold on for the win. Inaugural winner Stuart Appleby was tied for eighth entering the final round in 2010 when he carded a final-round 59 to win. The next year, Scott Stallings was second behind Anthony Kim before winning in a playoff.

Also, the third-round leader/co-leader has held on to win just nine times in 27 stroke-play events so far in 2012 (most recently Jason Dufner at the HP Byron Nelson Championship).

We’ve also seen some pretty large comebacks this year (see chart below). So if Simpson doesn’t win, who will?

Biggest final-round comebacks in 2012

Deficit Player who won Tournament
8 Kyle Stanley Waste Management Phoenix Open
7 Brandt Snedeker Farmers Insurance Open
7 John Huh Mayakoba Golf Classic
6 Phil Mickelson AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
6 Marc Leishman Travelers Championship
