Long-time PGA TOUR caddy Scott Steele died Friday night, five days after suffering a heart attack prior to the final round of the Greater Hickory Golf Classic at Rock Barn.
Steele, who was 55, suffered the heart attack on Oct. 14 in the caddy parking lot. Champions Tour veteran Jerry Pate administered CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived.
Steele, who was working for Kirk Triplett, was then taken to Frye’s Medical Center in Hickory, N.C., and placed in a medically-induced hypothermic coma.
Triplett said Steele was a "professional in every sense of the word." Steele caddied for Larry Mize for five years, including in 1987 when the Augusta, Ga., native won the Masters, and he also worked for Tim Herron.
"It didn’t matter if you were a major champion or a Monday qualifier you always got his best game," Triplett said. "That’s easy to say but very hard to do. He may be gone but he will continue to be an inspiration to me and many others for a long time to come. My heart goes out to Barb and his family. I am going to miss him deeply both on and off the course.”
Mize said Steele was a "very good caddie, but an even better friend and a good man."
"He was just a great guy who was well-liked by everyone," Mize said. "I can’t say enough good things about Scott. He was a very encouraging guy and I’m saddened he is gone. … Even though we didn’t work together recently our friendship continued and it was always great to see him. … Today is a sad day for a lot of players as well as a lot of caddies.”
