FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – With birdies in three of his first five holes, Nick Watney has taken the solo lead in Saturday’s third round of The Barclays.
Watney is 2 under through his first eighth holes and 10 under for the tournament. That’s one shot ahead of his 36-hole co-leader Sergio Garcia, who is 1 under on the day.
Watney, however, failed to birdie the par-5 seventh, the easiest hole on the course. It’s the second time this week he has failed to birdie the 553-yard hole. Watney is a collective 6 under on the other two par-5 holes at the Bethpage State Park Black Course.
Brandt Snedeker birdied four of his first seven holes, but is 1 over in his last eight holes and is 3 under for the round. At 6 under for the tournament, he’s currently tied for fourth with Rickie Fowler, Vijay Singh and Bob Estes, who are midway through their rounds.
Tiger Woods had a rollercoaster front nine. He bogeyed the third, birdied the fifth, bogeyed the sixth, birdied the seventh and eighth and bogeyed the nine to make the turn at even par for his round. He remains 5 under for the tournament.
Dustin Johnson is also 5 under, as is John Senden and Pat Perez.
Kevin Stadler (65), Brian Harman (68) and Greg Chalmers (68) have finished their rounds and are currently inside the top 10 on the leaderboard.
