The Toronto Raptors Targeted Two Small Forwards in the 2013 NBA Draft

Yahoo Contributor Network

COMMENTARY | Leading up to the NBA Draft new Toronto Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri told the media that he was trying to make a trade in order to get a draft pick.

It turns out two of his targets were Giannis Adetokunbo and Tony Mitchell.

Eric Koreen of the National Post wrote yesterday the Raptors "tried to get into the draft last night at various spots, with particular interest in Giannis Adetokunbo and Tony Mitchell."

Perfect, just what the Raptors need: more wings. Both players are small forwards or shooting guards in the NBA and the Raptors are already stocked at that position with DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Terrence Ross, Landry Fields, and Linas Kleiza.

However, what that does show is that the status of all those players and their chances of returning to the team are precarious. Clearly Ujiri isn't enthused about moving forward with all of those players and he's looking to move some of them this summer while adding more youth to the roster via draft picks.

Something else that became clear this week is that Bryan Colangelo walked away from his position this week because the team he constructed is on the verge of being nuked.

It's becoming clear it will be a busy and exciting summer for the franchise as Ujiri leaves his mark on the team. It will be interesting to see which players are in training camp this October and what new faces are wearing Raptors' jerseys.
