Goals from Daniel Luduena and Candido Ramirez with minutes left in the match were enough to give Santos Laguna the 3-1 win over Toronto FC at BMO Field on Tuesday.
All the scoring happened in the second half with both teams not really creating much in the first 45 minutes. Santos had the better of the play but couldn't capitalize before the break.
In the second stanza, the Mexican club quickly jumped ahead thanks to a lovely finish from Carlos Quintero. Bursting into the right side of the box after being played in by Marc Crosas, Quintero blasted home with his right foot from a very tight angle just outside the six-yard box.
Toronto took its time getting back into the match but scored the equalizer just before the 70 minute mark. A deep set piece from Torsten Frings bounced around the area before it was picked up by Quincy Amarikwa, who fired home to tie the score at 1-1.
It would be late heartbreak from the MLS club, though, as Daniel Luduena worked a wonderful one-two at the top of the area and found himself streaking into the box unchallenged in the 90th minute. Firing home past a very busy Freddy Hall, Luduena gave Santos the vital 2-1 lead.
Candido Ramirez added a similar strike minutes to seal the victory for the visitor.
The clubs are now tied atop Group 1.
