Toronto defenseman Gunnarsson has separated shoulder

The SportsXchange

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that Swedish defenseman Carl Gunnarsson will miss the team's two remaining regular season games with a separated shoulder.

Gunnarsson suffered the injury Tuesday when he was hit by Buffalo Sabres forward Marcus Foligno in what would ultimately be a 6-5 Maple Leafs road loss to the host Sabres.

Toronto coach Randy Carlyle told the media on Wednesday that Gunnarsson will be out for between four to six weeks as a result of the injury.

As a result, Gunnarsson will likely be unable to play for his native Sweden national team in next month's world hockey championships.

Toronto, which has had a near-monumental collapse during the second half of the regular season, will miss the playoffs as a result. The Maple Leafs have two games remaining before players go their separate ways for the offseason: hosting Tampa Bay on Thursday and wrapping up the 2011-12 campaign Saturday at arch-rival Montreal.

The Maple Leafs have the fifth-worst record in the NHL at 34-36-10.

Gunnarsson, 25, has played 187 career games in the NHL, all with Toronto, and has a combined total of 54 points and 44 penalty minutes. Thus far this season, he had four goals, 15 assists and 20 penalty minutes in 76 games played.
