Sometimes there are lasting iconic moments from the Olympic Games, such as when Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave the black power salute while on the podium at the 1968 Summer Games. In a time when social media is almost universally used, some of the lasting moments from the games may be found in the viral images and videos fans can't get enough of. Here is a look at five of the most memorable moments from the first ten days of the 2012 Olympic Games.
McKayla Maroney's Scowl
The lasting image many may have of one of the best female vaulters in the world is of her standing on the podium in second place with a big scowl on her face. She had done a great first vault in the women's individual gymnastics event, but fell on her second attempt. Though she still got a silver medal, she was very disappointed in her performance. The 16 year old could not keep the disappointment off her face during the big moment. This image has been superimposed over many other images and captioned.
Stephan Feck's Flop
In what had to be a heartbreaking performance in the men's 3m individual dive, Stephan Feck managed to get 0.0 across the board after he landed on his back during a dive. This dive has gone viral in both video and image form. It is not often that an Olympic caliber diver would dive like many untrained people have at a public pool. It is a good reminder that everyone is human.
Alexandra Raisman's Parents
Alexandra Raisman is a gold medal winning gymnast for the United States. While she was qualifying for the women's individual all-around competition, cameras caught something going on in the stands. As she performed her uneven bar routine, her parents were seemingly performing it with her from their seats. Both her mother and father moved along with her while seated. In an interview, they indicated that they did not realize they were doing it. It was funny to see, but heartwarming in a way because of their supportiveness for the young gymnast.
Swimmers' Music Video
While at training camp before the Olympics began, the United States swimming team, including stars such as Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin, filmed a mock video of the song "Call Me Maybe" that has even been aired on television. Though the song, originally by Carly Rae Jepsen, has been parodied many times, it seems that the swimmers' version has been the biggest hit by far. The video has been making the rounds on television and the social media websites ever since.
Olympic Divers on the Toilet
Many viewers have likely noticed that divers tend to make strange faces while diving. One viewer believed that divers' faces resembled the faces people make when using the toilet. The viewer edited the photos of the divers during their dives and put the divers on toilets. It is an interesting collage to say the least. This image has been making the social media rounds since early August.
