It has been announced that the IZOD IndyCar series is seeking to expand the schedule from a dismal 15 races in 2012 to a much more robust 19 races in 2013. If the series wants to expand by that many races, there will likely need to be some new venues added. Here is a look at the five venues I would most like to see added to the IZOD IndyCar schedule for 2013.
Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez
The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, located in Mexico City, Mexico, has been considered for the series. It was rumored that it would be included in the 2013 schedule. The circuit would be a great addition to the series. Though IndyCar drivers race in Canada, there are currently no Mexican races on the schedule. There is just one Mexican driver in the Indy Lights series and one Mexican driver who has raced in the IZOD series. Having a race in Mexico City may bring in new potential drivers and an influx of fans.
Circuit of the Americas
The Circuit of the Americas is still being built in Austin, Texas. Though it was specifically designed for the Formula 1 series, the location and style of the track would appear perfect for the IZOD IndyCar series as well. The circuit has faced its share of hardship as the contract with the Formula 1 organization appeared off at one point, but it now appears that the circuit should be ready for use at the end of 2012. Though the series already has a race at Texas Motor Speedway, there may be enough interest to support the two races.
Circuit de Monaco
Though I prefer the races that take place in the United States, so that I can watch the races live without being up all hours of the night, I think the Circuit de Monaco would be a great international addition. The circuit is currently used in the Formula 1 series and has proven to be an entertaining venue for racing. The historic venue would provide a fun location for the fans that chose to travel too. Unfortunately, between the risks inherent to the circuit and the time it takes to build the course, there is little, if any, chance Monaco would ever be added to the schedule. It is one of the biggest events in the Formula 1 series each year.
Port Imperial Street Circuit
The Port Imperial Street Circuit is also still being put together. The circuit will take drivers through the streets of Hudson County, New Jersey. If the deal falls apart with the Formula 1 series, it would be great for this to become an IZOD IndyCar race. Alternatively, it would be great to see the series race on a specially designed course through the streets of a city in New York.
Miller Motorsports Park
Having previously hosted the American Le Mans series, Miller Motorsports Park would likely be a good fit for the IZOD IndyCar series. There are multiple track configurations that could be used and there is ample width for passing. The circuit is located in Tooele, Utah, which would prove a different setting for the race and likely be well received by fans.
