Yahoo Contributor Network

August was a great month for offense in Major League Baseball. Across the American and National Leagues, players hit 861 home runs, the most in any month to date in the 2012 season. The top hitters in August include Detroit Tigers' sluggers Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera and San Francisco Giants' star Buster Posey.

Prince Fielder, Detroit Tigers:

With the Detroit Tigers fighting for a playoff spot, Prince Fielder turned up his game and played his best month of the year. In August, Fielder was the toughest out in baseball with a .370 batting average and .491 on-base percentage. He belted a season-high seven home runs and led the majors with a 1.154 OPS. He worked 19 walks and struck out only ten times in 92 at-bats.

Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers:

Not to be outdone, Miguel Cabrera added to his MVP resume with an outstanding August. Cabrera registered 14 multi-hit games to bat .357 with a .429 OBP in 26 games. He homered eight times and surpassed the 30 home run mark for the sixth consecutive season. Cabrera posted a 1.092 OPS, his highest for any month in 2012.

Buster Posey, San Francisco Giants:

A number of Giants enjoyed great performances in August and Buster Posey led the way. With a .371 average, .482 OBP, and 13 extra-base hits, Posey led the Giants to a 18-11 month to open up a 4.5 game lead in the NL West. He walked more than he struck out (21/18 BB/K) and finished with the third highest OPS among players with at least 50 at-bats. Since the All-Star break, he's batting .403 with a .484 OBP and nine home runs.

Giancarlo Stanton, Miami Marlins:

Stanton didn't make a lot of contact in August, but when he did he got his money's worth. Despite spending the first week of the month on the disabled list, Stanton tied for the Major League lead with ten home runs along with seven doubles. He batted .313 and led all hitters with a .759 slugging percentage in August.

Chase Headley, San Diego Padres:

Chase Headley built on his career year with his best month to date in August. Headley tied Stanton with ten home runs in August, including four at Petco Park where the Padres as a team have just 31 homers all season. He batted .306 with a .956 OPS and drove in an MLB-leading 31 RBI to lead the Padres' lineup as they went 18-10 in August.
