The heavyweight division in MMA is thriving once again, and there should be some interesting bouts in the near future. Here are the top five heavyweights in the UFC right now:
1. Junior Dos Santos
The current UFC heavyweight champion is the best heavyweight in MMA right now, and he's been particularly impressive in his last two outings, manhandling Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir. Dos Santos has the best hands in the division, and he's good at keeping his opponents where he wants them to be.
2. Alistair Overeem
"The Demolition Man" has finished 10 of his last 11 opponents in the first round, and he's one of the few threats to dos Santos' reign. Overeem is the most accomplished kick-boxer in the UFC's heavyweight division, and it only takes a few blows from him to put anyone away.
3. Cain Velasquez
Velasquez bounced right back from his loss against dos Santos with an impressive win against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva at UFC 146. It's obvious Cain is still one of the best heavyweights in the UFC, but it remains to be seen if he's good enough to defeat Junior. The two will meet again at UFC 155, and I expect Velasquez to put on a better effort.
4. Daniel Cormier
Cormier isn't yet one of the UFC's heavyweights, but he's expected to move over after his Nov. 3 fight. Cormier hasn't had that many fights against top caliber opponents, but he's the most promising rising star in the heavyweight division. His wrestling is top-notch, and his hands keep getting better every time he steps inside the cage. Cormier is getting ready for his last fight under the Strikeforce banner, and then it's off to competing with the big boys in the UFC.
5. Fabricio Werdum
Werdum has come a long way from just being a BJJ specialist, and he's capable of competing with anyone in the heavyweight division.
