Surf fans have a lot to look forward to in June 2012 because there are quite a few surfing events on tap. At least I know that I am excited about each of the planned events. With that said, here's a quick look at five of the surfing competitions that shouldn't be missed:
Volcom Fiji Pro
First up is the Volcom Fiji Pro. It is scheduled to kick off in Fiji on June 3 and run through June 15, 2012. The official heat draw has yet to be fully released. What is known is that Aussie Mitch Coleburn is expected to be one of the event's wildcards. Some of the other surfers that I will be keeping an eye on are Josh Kerr, John John Florence, Kai Otton and the Hobgood brothers. Part of what makes this event intriguing is that there hasn't been an ASP event held there in a while. Therefore, there is no telling how well surfers like Florence will fair in the Fiji swell. I suspect that fans will see a lot of high-flying maneuvers, which is alright with me.
Real B Voice Pro Longboard
While the Volcom Fiji Pro is underway, the Real B Voice Pro Longboard is expected to start at Japan's Taito Beach in Isumi City, Chiba. The event is part of the ASP's Longboard Qualifying Series and it is set to take place June 9 through June 10, 2012. Last year's winners were Hawaiian Bonga Perkins and Japan's Hiroka Yoshikawa. This year's draw has yet to be released. What makes it a stand out event to watch is the epic swell that Taito Beach is known for. I am predicting that we will see a lot of right handers. Personally, I'll be keeping an eye out for longboarder Taylor Jensen. I think that his surfing style is well suited for that kind of swell.
Maui and Sons Arica World Star Tour
The Maui and Sons Arica World Star Tour is anticipated to start June 12 and run through June 17, 2012 at El Gringo in Arica, Chile. Some of the surfers expected to compete in the event are Peruvian Cristobal De Col and Hawaiian Ian Gentil. The area is known to deliver some outrageous surf. As such, I can't wait to see what the surfers will be able to do with it. I am hoping that I'll get to see a combination of power surfing and jaw-dropping aerials.
Murasaki Quiksilver Jeju Open
The Murasaki Quiksilver Jeju Open is scheduled to take place June 14 through June 18, 2012 at Jungmun Beach on Jeju Island. In my opinion, it should prove to be very interesting because it will be the first ASP sanctioned, 2-Star event to be held in the Republic of Korea. A $30,000 prize purse is expected to be on the line. The list of surfers slated to compete in the event has yet to be released.
Roxy Waikiki Classic
The Roxy Waikiki Classic is expected to take place June 16 through June 17, 2012 at Queens Beach in Waikiki, Hawaii. It is part of the ASP's Longboard Qualifying Series and it is considered a 1-Star event. Up for grabs us a $2,000 prize purse. The official list of amateur and pro surfers expected to surf in the event has yet to be revealed. I am hoping that surfers Lindsey Steinriede and Kelia Moniz will be a part of the line-up. Both are highly ranked longboarders and I think that they will do really well with the Waikiki swell.
Killeen Gonzalez enjoys water sports with her family. She also has a history of interviewing pro surfers.
