Kentucky is a wonderful state to visit, especially if you are planning a summer tent camping trip with your family. The state's parks are affordable and have a lot to offer in the way of activities. Here's a quick rundown on five of my favorite parks:
Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park
Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park is located in Burkesville and features drive-in campsites that come equipped with grills, picnic tables, water and electricity. The park features two golf courses, a restaurant, sports courts, a cave and a full service marina. A swimming pool, game room, playgrounds and multi-use trails are also onsite. I'd recommend the 8.3 mile Boom Ridge Trail. Nightly rates start at $22 per site.
Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park
Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park is located in Gilbertsville. It features shaded, drive-in, primitive tent sites that come equipped with a picnic table. Other sites have water and electricity. The park features tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course, a restaurant and a full service marina. Horseback riding and fishing are also available onsite. Nightly rates start at $14 per site.
Jenny Wiley State Resort Park
Jenny Wiley State Resort Park is located in Prestonsburg. It features grassy, shady tent sites that come equipped with a picnic table and water hook-ups. The park offers elk tours, hiking and biking trails, a 153 slip marina and a 9-hole golf course. I'd recommend hiking the 4.5 mile Jenny Wiley Trail and biking the Switchback Trail. There is also a restaurant, a theater, playgrounds and a swimming pool. Nightly rates start at $16 per site.
Carter Caves State Resort Park
Carter Caves State Resort Park is located west of Ashland and has drive-in, equestrian and backcountry campsites available. The park has six caves. I'd recommend checking out the Cascade Caves' 30 foot waterfall and the X Caves' Great Chandelier. The park also offers horseback riding, boating, geocaching, tennis, swimming and fishing. In addition, there are over 25 miles of multi-use trails, playgrounds and two golf courses. Nightly rates start at $16 per site.
Green River Lake State Park
Green River Lake State Park is located south of Campbellsville. It features primitive, drive-in, grassy tent sites that are equipped with picnic tables. Some of the sites face the water. The park features 28 miles of multi-use trails and a 200 slip marina that offers jet ski rentals. I'd suggest hiking the Lindsey-Wilson Trail. There are also sports courts, an 18-hole miniature golf course, playgrounds, fishing and swimming onsite. Nightly rates start at $13 per site.
