By winning the Masters, Bubba Watson took his place among the top Christian athletes in sports today. Bubba Watson, Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow have all become household names. In addition to being evangelical Christians, they are also all-star celebrities.
Here is a look at the top Christian athletes currently playing sports:
Mariano Rivera is one of the best relief pitchers in the MLB. Five World Series titles with the New York Yankees sit among his accolades. Unlike many top Christian athletes, such as Bubba Watson, Mariano Rivera does not prominently display his faith. However, his philanthropic gifts to build a church and school in Panama City evidence a deep concern for people, and fans often see him praying before games. Teammates know Mariano Rivera does all this as a Christian, because Philippians 4:13--"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me"--is inscribed on his glove.
Her athletic ability and faith combine to make Allyson Felix the top Christian athlete in women's track and field. Allyson Felix's most notable medals include a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics and a gold one at the 2008 Olympics. She will be running in the Olympics again at the 2012 London Olympics. In between running, Allyson Felix has attended seminary. She regularly attributes her gifts to God.
Tim Tebow is the most imitated top Christian athlete. His public prayers on NFL fields, during which he kneels on one knee, have been copied by fans throughout the U.S. Before his prayers were popular, Tim Tebow asserted himself as a top Christian athlete by standing with Focus on the Family in two Super Bowl ads.
Until this February, when Jeremy Lin had sudden success as the New York Knicks' point guard, he was an unknown NBA player. Now, Jeremy Lin is one of the top Christian athletes, and a prominent Christian in New York City.
As I wrote about in a previous article, Bubba Watson's win at the 2012 Masters, on April 8, 2012, made him the most prominent Christian on the PGA Tour. Bubba Watson's Twitter account states, "Christian. Husband. Daddy. Pro Golfer. Owner of General Lee 1." The order of titles in this profile reveals a lot about Bubba Watson. Bubba Watson might be one of the top Christian athletes playing sports today, but he is a Christian before he is an athlete.
Scott Brodie enjoys playing sports and watching them played. He is interested in how top Christian athletes live out their faith and writes on sports news.
