Top 3 Groups to Watch at the Travelers Championship on Thursday: A Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

The 2012 Travelers Championship kicks off on June 21 and features many winners on the PGA Tour this year, including major winners in Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson. What follows are the top three groups to watch when the event kicks off.

Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson, and Keegan Bradley

This will definitely be the main group to watch on Thursday at the Travelers Championship as it features both of the major winners this year. Both Simpson and Watson seemingly came out of nowhere to win their respective majors for the first of their careers, and both have a good chance to play well this week. If I had to pick one out of the two it would be Simpson, as he has a great iron game along with ranking in the top 20 in strokes gained from putting this year on the PGA Tour.

Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, and Johnson Wagner

All three players have wins on the Tour this year, with Mahan being the only one with two. Since his second win at the Shell Houston Open back in early April, Hunter has sort of been up and down, with two top 25 finishes and a missed cut over his last six starts. Amazingly enough he still ranks 13th in driving accuracy and 6th in greens in regulation, so it is hard to go against someone who has the sort of long game that Mahan possesses right now. Look out for Kuchar this week as well, as he has three top 30 finishes over his last three starts since his win at the Players Championship and also ranks in the top 26 in the same categories mentioned earlier.

Louis Oosthuizen, Padraig Harrington, and Justin Leonard

Louis Oosthuizen has had a solid year in 2012, losing to Bubba Watson at the Masters in a playoff to go with five top 25 finishes in eleven starts. He can hit the ball over 290 yards on average, but has been inconsistent as far as driving accuracy along with his putting, which has led to four missed cuts over his past five starts. TPC River Highlands is a fairly easy course as far as PGA Tour standards are concerned, so I would expect for him to turn things around and play well this week.
