Tony Martin almost missed the 2012 London Olympics when he broke his cheekbone and jaw after hitting a car during a training ride near his home in April, according to ESPN. He lost consciousness for about 15 minutes. He was able to recover in time for the Tour de France, but after breaking his wrist in the first stage of the race, he decided to drop out in order to recover in time to compete for a time trial Olympic gold medal. He is the current World Time Trial Champion in Copenhagen after winning against Fabian Cancellara in 2011.
