Tom Cruise Tells Jimmy Kimmel Why He's Never Done a Superhero Movie

Tom Cruise has saved the world numerous times over the course of his illustrious movie career, but one type of character he’s never played is an outright superhero. Two nights ago on Jimmy Kimmel Live, he explained exactly why he’s shied away from such parts.

Appearing on the show to promote Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Cruise told Kimmel that no conversations have ever taken place with Marvel or DC about him stepping into the shoes (and/or tights, or armor) of one of their famed do-gooders.

“No. Look, I really enjoy those films a lot. I enjoy them. But I make the Missions, and the kind of… Reacher, and just different kinds of films.”

There’s probably at least some reason to wonder about Cruise’s claim he’s never even had a conversation about such a role — as one of Hollywood’s pre-eminent A-listers, most big summer-blockbuster opportunities must cross his agent’s desk. Nonetheless, it’s not altogether surprising that he’s never pursued it, given that he already plays larger-than-life superheroic badasses in the aforementioned Mission: Impossible and Jack Reacher films — and unlike Marvel and DC series, both Cruise franchises are predicated on his star power, above and beyond the properties on which they’re based.
