TNT and PGA.com will present the 2012 PGA Grand Slam of Golf with three of this year's four major champions and last year's PGA Championship winner teeing off at the Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda to determine the best-of-the-best in a 36-hole event. This year's field of major championship winners features Bubba Watson (2012 Masters), Webb Simpson (2012 U.S. Open), Ernie Els (2012 Open Championship) and Keegan Bradley, PGA Grand Slam of Golf defending champion and 2011 PGA Championship winner. TNT will televise the event Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 4-7 p.m. ET/PT and Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 4-8 p.m. ET/PT, with exclusive early-round coverage both days on PGA.com.
"The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is the most exclusive golf tournament in the world to qualify for and this year's field offers an exciting mix of two past winners of the event with two newcomers," said Matthew Hong, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Sports Operations at Turner Sports.
Here's a closer look at the field:
The field started to take shape in in April with Watson's dramatic triumph at Augusta National. The long-driving lefty defeated South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen on the second hole of a playoff at the Masters after executing a remarkable wedge shot from the trees right of the 10th fairway. Watson needed to hit a hook with his wedge to get around the trouble in front of him. He did just that, somehow finding the green to set up what would be a 2-putt par for the victory and his first major title.
Simspon joined Watson as a first-time major victor with his win in the U.S. Open at Olympic Club. True to form, Olympic proved to be the toughest test of the four majors in 2012, as Simpson's winning total came in at 1-over par. He narrowly avoided a playoff after a fantastic up-and-down par save on the 72nd hole, but had to wait around to be sure his score would hold up.
Els, meanwhile, collected his fourth major victory at Royal Lytham and St. Annes in the Open Championship by one shot over Australia's Adam Scott. Els birdied the final hole to post a 68. Scott had a four-shot advantage through 14 holes in the final round, but closed out the tournament with four consecutive bogeys. With the win, Els has now won majors in three different decades, joining the likes of countryman Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Billy Casper.
Bradley rounded out the Grand Slam field after a scheduling conflict caused 2012 PGA Champion Rory McIlroy to withdraw. Bradley is the defending champ in Bermuda and enjoyed a stellar 2012 season -- just his second on the PGA Tour -- which was highlighted by a win at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and a tie for third in his PGA Championship title defense at Kiawah Island's Ocean Course. TNT's event coverage will feature veteran golf announcers Verne Lundquist (play-by-play), Ian Baker-Finch (analyst) and Billy Kratzert (course reporter), who will provide on-air analysis and commentary. This year marks the sixth year the PGA Grand Slam of Golf has been played in Bermuda and the fourth year it has been contested at the Port Royal Golf Course. The course, at 6,842 yards, is the longest in Bermuda.
PGA.com, the official website of The PGA of America, will offer comprehensive online coverage of the event including live coverage both days. The site also will provide a hole-by-hole course tour, player profiles, live scoring, photo galleries and daily on-demand highlights. Additionally, PGA.com will offer live coverage updates on Tuesday and Wednesday, providing an inside look at the event.
