COMMENTARY | As 2013 draws to a close, the awards season is in full swing for many different forms of entertainment, including professional wrestling.
The WWE recently aired its 2013 Slammy Awards show on Monday Night Raw. As usual, the winners and losers inspired lots of controversy, as wrestling fans debated who walked away with trophies and who didn't. Unfortunately, TNA does not have its own version of the WWE's Slammy Awards. TNA President Dixie Carter needs to change this in the future because TNA wrestlers and fans deserve an awards show of their own.
Of course, rival wrestling promotions would never copy creative ideas from each other, so the first order of business for Dixie Carter would be to choose a new name for TNA's awards. Pro wrestling has already rhymed off the Grammys once, so Dixie needs to be creative on this. Since she seems to be having so much fun playing a heel character on television, she should really make everyone mad and name TNA's awards the "Dixies."
Of course, there isn't time for TNA to award Dixies to its wrestlers this year, but I've come up with some funny and serious Dixie Awards for 2013, just like the WWE's Slammy Awards. Also, the WWE presented 23 Slammy Awards for 2013, but six Dixie Awards would suffice for the trophy's opening act. The next order of business for Dixie Carter would be to figure out how TNA fans would vote for the Dixies.
Unfortunately, there is no TNA App for wrestling fans to vote for the Dixies, unless TNA could program ballots onto Jeff Hardy's Fitness App. Instead, TNA should use good old-fashioned Twitter hashtags for its voting. Since her heel turn, #AskDixie hasn't been trending so well on Twitter, but #VoteForDixie would definitely be the number one global Twitter trend. Alternately, Dixie Carter could just anger wrestling fans and choose the winners of the Dixies herself.
If I were choosing the winners of the 2013 Dixie Awards, this would be my list of recipients.
Fractured Faction Award
This would be a tough call, as two mega stables each met their demise in 2013. Both the Main Event Mafia and the Aces and Eights went the way of D-X and the NWO in 2013. But I'd have to give this Dixie Award to Aces and Eights.
Knockout of the Year
All joking aside, 2013 was a great year for the TNA Knockouts. Although its roster isn't as deep as it once was, the Knockouts still have some of the best female wrestling matches anywhere. In a close vote, Gail Kim wins the Dixie.
Booze of the Year
James Storm has been drinking beer in TNA longer than Steve Austin did in the WWE. And we all know about ODB's liquid courage. But the winner of the 2013 Dixie Award for Booze of the Year goes to Christopher Daniels' appletini.
Match of the Year
It was certainly a great moment when Chris Sabin returned from two ACL tears to defeat Bully Ray for the TNA Heavyweight Championship. But TNA's greatest match of 2013 was Gail Kim vs. Taryn Terrell at Slammiversary XI.
Worst Couple of the Year
This 2013 Dixie Award is easy to present because there's only one nominee. Bully Ray and Brooke Hogan's marriage was the low point of the Aces and Eights angle. They made ODB and Eric Young look like a match made in heaven.
Wrestler of the Year
How great would it be to see grainy footage of AJ Styles accepting this TNA Dixie Award on Impact live via Mexico, Japan, or India? Dixie Carter might spontaneously combust if AJ Styles is holding the TNA belt in one hand and a Dixie in the other.
Patrick Michael lives in New Orleans and has always been a big fan of pro wrestling. Patrick's favorite wrestling promotion was Mid-South Wrestling back in the 1980s. Patrick's favorite wrestling angle of all-time was the NWO and his favorite wrestler is Roddy Piper. Follow Patrick Michael on Twitter at patmichael84.
