Falcons acquire CB Samuel for seventh-round pick

Contrary to multiple reports, we hear, Eagles CB Asante Samuel is not close to being shipped to the Titans for a conditional third-rounder. A source on the scene indicated that Tennessee is highly unlikely to part with that high of a pick, and is just as unlikely to offer Samuel, 31, the lucrative contract extension he's looking for. Following the departure of Cortland Finnegan, the Titans’ defense will be looking to replace the physicality that Finnegan provided. Samuel, who has a reputation around the league for having little interest in playing physically, is not the same kind of player. One league observer pointed out that, if the Eagles can't find an interested party, they could release Samuel, who is owed nearly $10 million in 2012. Thus, if the Titans want to add the veteran playmaker, they could roll the dice and try to add him on their own terms later in the offseason.

The club still could be in the market for a veteran corner, however, and drafting at least one more in April is not out of the question. But word is Tennessee has a number of in-house candidates to be the No. 3 corner behind Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner. At the moment, the favorite could be 2009 third-rounder Ryan Mouton, who is working his way back from a torn Achilles he suffered last August. As a rookie, Mouton displayed the versatility to work inside and outside and, if he can stay healthy — which has been an issue for him — is said to have a leg up on second-year players Chris Hawkins and Tommie Campbell.
