Timbers acquire Harrington and trade Brunner in separate deals

The Portland Timbers admittedly needed a roster shake-up after a disappointing second season in MLS, and the club continued to shift pieces around on a busy Monday.

On the heels of dealing right back Kosuke Kimura to the New York Red Bulls, the Timbers acquired fullback Michael Harrington from Sporting Kansas City and traded center back Eric Brunner to the Houston Dynamo in separate deals. The Timbers sent an undisclosed amount of allocation money to Sporting KC, while acquiring an undisclosed amount from Houston.

Harrington, a former U.S. youth international, spent all six of his years in MLS with Kansas City, appearing in 149 games. He played in just 11 games for Sporting KC in 2012 after becoming a second-choice option for manager Peter Vermes.

Brunner was a stalwart starter for Portland, but concussions limited his playing time in 2012. He provides ample depth behind starters Bobby Boswell and Jermaine Taylor for the two-time-running MLS Cup finalist, whose Canadian defender Andre Hainault is reportedly out of contract and could be headed elsewhere.
