Tigers SS Iglesias out about a week

Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias will be sidelined for about a week because of shin splints, MLB.com reported Friday.

Iglesias has been bothered throughout his career by the problem, which is technically stress reactions in both shins, and the problem flared up again this week.

The Tigers hope to reduce the inflammation and curtail any further problems by holding him out of action for a while. The team also wants to find a long-term solution for the problem.

"It's a stress reaction of the shins, left and right, probably from moving on the different surfaces," head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Friday morning, according to MLB.com. "The guy works out all winter and then comes onto the softer ground. And we just want to nip it in the bud. We don't want it to become an issue."

Iglesias started at shortstop Thursday and went 1-for-2 with a walk and an infield single.

A bone scan taken Wednesday and an MRI on Thursday showed no structural damage.

Iglesias was acquired from Boston midway through last season. In 2013, he hit .330 in 63 games for the Red Sox, then hit .259 in 46 games for the Tigers.
