Tigers sign OF Davis to two-year deal

Adding depth and speed to their outfield, the Detroit Tigers finalized a two-year contract with Rajai Davis on Wednesday.

The team did not announce the financial terms of the deal, but multiple media reports indicated Davis will make a total of $10 million the next two seasons.

"We're thrilled to add him," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said at the baseball winter meetings in Orlando, Fla. "He brings an element that we haven't had a lot of in our organization in recent times with some speed and base-stealing ability."

Last season with the Toronto Blue Jays, Davis hit .260 with a .312 on-base percentage, a .375 slugging percentage, six homers, 24 RBIs and 45 stolen bases. He had 46 steals in 2012, finishing second in the American League each season.

Davis, 33, is an eight-year major league veteran who saw action with the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants, Oakland A's and Toronto.

With Detroit, Davis figures to platoon with Andy Dirks in left field while also spelling center fielder Austin Jackson and right fielder Torii Hunter.

"Detroit has a history of winning," Davis said. "I'm a winner, and I want to win. I'm just thankful that, at the end of the day, this was the best decision."

The Tigers opened a spot for Davis on the 40-man roster by designating right-hander Luis Marte for assignment. Marte, 27, had season-ending right shoulder surgery in June. He made just three appearances for Triple-A Toledo this year, the last April 9, and he went 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA.
