Tigers DL Dotel, recall Rondon

Closer of the future Bruce Rondon was recalled from Triple-A Toledo by the Detroit Tigers, who retroactively placed Octavio Dotel on the disabled list with a strained elbow.

Dotel has experienced inflammation in his right elbow since April 20, and the Tigers made the move effective as of that date. Joaquin Benoit will continue as the primary closer until further notice, but Rondon is viewed as the best option in the ninth inning.

Rondon entered spring training as the likely closer for the Tigers but the hard-throwing right-hander encountered issues with his control. Manager Jim Leyland, who praised Rondon and his future to begin spring training, said Rondon needed some time in the minors to rediscover his confidence and consistency.

Rondon didn't allow a run with Toledo, pitching 7 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts and two walks.
