ARLINGTON, Texas - Miguel Cabrera's double off the left-field wall helped push the Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday night at Rangers Ballpark.

Cabrera's fifth-inning double scored Andy Dirks, who had opened the inning with a single, to break a scoreless tie.

After Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch, Victor Martinez singled to right to load the based with Alex Avila coming to the plate.

Avila lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score what would be the decisive run.

And the rest was up to the Tigers pitching staff, which one night earlier had given up 10 runs in a loss.

Each team had its chances to score though. Combined they stranded 18 runners on base.

A perfect throw by Texas center fielder Leonys Martin kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in the third when Dirks tried to score on a single by Cabrera. Martin gunned down Dirks with a strike to the plate.

Tiger's starter Rick Porcello (2-2) went 5 2/3 innings, striking out six while giving up only five hits. His lone mistake was against Geovany Soto, who led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a home run, his second in as many nights.

The Tigers bullpen shut down the Rangers' powerful lineup, but not without a struggle. Jose Ortega took over for Porcello and was followed by Drew Smyly, Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde.

Texas threatened in both the sixth and eighth innings.

Porcello walked Adrian Beltre with two outs in the seventh inning. Ortega relieved Porcello and promptly gave up a single to Nelson Cruz. Ortega got out of the jam when Mitch Moreland's hard hit grounder to second ended the threat.

In the eighth inning, Benoit relieved Smyly. Singles by Leury Garcia and Beltre put runners on the corner for the dangerous Cruz. Benoit escaped by getting Cruz to ground into a double play and setting up Valverde to earn his sixth save of the year.

Rangers starter Nick Tepesch pitched five innings and gave up six hits and two earned runs to fall to 3-4.

Notes: Rookie Justin Grimm is scheduled to square off against the Tiger's Anibal Sanchez on Saturday. Grimm has dropped his three previous starts. ... Texas right-hander Alexi Ogando had a MRI on his right arm on Thursday night that revealed no structural issues. Ogando was placed on the 15-day DL after his start on Wednesday with biceps tendinitis.
