Tiger Woods’ Successful 2012 Season: A Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

The golf year has not yet ended, but with all of the majors now completed for 2012 it is time for some reflection. In a sport where the major championships are almost the only titles of any consequence, was it truly a lost year for Tiger Woods?

In the mind of Tiger Woods it probably was. Although it would be nice to know how he views his 2012 performance in a moment of deep reflection. To some it would seem to have been a good year. In my own mind I consider 2012 to have been a successful year for Tiger Woods.

Consider this; Woods has won three tournaments on the PGA Tour thus far in 2012 and passed Jack Nicklaus on the all-time PGA Tour wins list. Woods has held a share of the 36-hole lead at multiple major championships in 2012. He is currently number one in the FedEx points standings and while he is currently third, Woods has risen to as high as number two in the official World Golf Rankings in 2012. Woods has also qualified for the American Ryder Cup team on the merits rather than depending on being a captain's pick. These successes show just how far he has come since 2011.

Contrast Tiger's 2012 success with his 2011 results. In seemingly every measurable way Woods has surpassed his 2011 season. In 2011 he did not win a regular PGA Tour event. If you look at Top 10 or Top 25 finishes, Woods has had a much better year in 2012. He did not even qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs in 2011! In terms of PGA Tour earnings, Woods has made 7.5 times as much money in 2012 as he did in 2011. I realize that these things are likely of little consolation to Woods, but I think he should try to dwell on the positives as he finishes 2012 and looks toward 2013.

In 2012 did Tiger Woods get closer to Nicklaus' record of most major championships won? No. Did he make major strides in his game compared to 2011? That is an unqualified yes and from my vantage point his prospects for the 2013 season would appear to be excellent.

Dwight is an avid golfer. While still relatively new to the game, he plays as often as the weather and his schedule will allow.
