Bobby Heenan, Sensational Sherry, Jim Cornette and even Captain Lou Albano were all managers that made a difference for the guys that they represented. Wrestling managers are a bit of a dying breed in professional wrestling. Of the ones that still exist, few are truly effective. Vickie Guerrero gets plenty of heat but I don't think it is for the reasons that wrestling talent wants heat. One thing is for certain, however. The WWE needs to bring back wrestling managers on a larger scale.
It would increase the options for older wrestlers in the business
Many of the older guys in the business hang on for far too long. Sometimes that is to get a paycheck and other times it is stay in the spotlight. Back in the day, wrestling managers were often former wrestlers themselves. How powerful would guys like Arn Anderson, Ric Flair and even Roddy Piper be as managers in today's WWE? This would allow the older generation a place to go when their earning days in the ring are over.
Having managers could help the younger talent get over faster and more effectively.
Like it or not, the WWE is trying hard to push their younger talent. It took them years to do it, but they are doing a very good job now of pushing the young guys. The problem with this is that the older crowd is still hanging on. It is hard to truly embrace the new when the main event slots are perpetually taken up by the aging superstars. Rather than continue doing that, allow those guys to take on a mentor/manager role with a young star. It could help them get over quickly and allow the older guys a paycheck along the way.
The marginal superstar would have a great chance to make it again
A perfect example of this is The Midnight Express and Jim Cornette back in the old NWA days. Beautiful Bobby and Dennis Condrey could not speak on the mike to save their lives, but they were brilliant in between the ropes as tag team specialists. Putting Cornette in place to be the mouthpiece for the team allowed them to become huge regional stars despite their shortcomings on the stick. There are a number of wrestlers in today's WWE that could benefit from such a pairing. Bringing back managers would allow these guys a chance to make it.
*Southern is a huge WWE fan that hopes we can go an entire year with only one world champion someday soon.
