COMMENTARY | The Green Bay Packers are entering a very important offseason of free agency, and there have been multiple reports that they intend to be active in free agency for a change.
Green Bay has the money to go out and spend on a couple of good free agents, but that usually isn't its way of building a team. Obviously, the Packers are going to be focusing on improving their defense in a big way, and there are three free agents that would fit very nicely with Green Bay.
1. Brian Orakpo, Outside Linebacker
One of the main issues that the Packers had this past season, was their difficulty in getting to the quarterback and putting pressure on the opposing offense. Orakpo would be able to come into town and change those issues immediately for the Packers, but would be a very pricy option as well. If the Packers decided to go all in and spend money to win another Super Bowl, this would be their best option to improve their defense dramatically. He recorded 10.0 sacks, 61 tackles, and a forced fumble in 15 games with the Washington Redskins last season.
2. Antoine Bethea, Safety
The secondary was another area of concern last season for the Green Bay Packers, and Antoine Bethea has been a cornerstone of the Indianapolis Colts' defense for years. He is a playmaker in the secondary, but did have some issues in coverage last season with the Colts. That being said, he also was having to deal with below average cornerbacks all year and injury issues as well. The Packers desperately need to bring a playmaker in at the safety position, and obviously missed Charles Woodson last year. Bethea made 110 tackles last season and picked of two passes.
3. Jared Allen, Defensive End
There's no question that Allen is one of the NFL's best pass rushers, but he might not be a fit for Green Bay's defense. Dom Capers could potentially use him effectively as an outside linebacker, but Allen might not like a position change at this point in his career. The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly going to allow him to walk in free agency, which could open the door for the Packers to bring him in. Allen recorded 11.5 sacks last season to go along with 52 tackles and two forced fumbles.
Obviously, all three of these players would command big contracts, but the Packers could decide to go all in for a championship. The defense was the only thing holding Green Bay back from making a playoff run last season, and any of these three guys would make a huge difference.
If the Packers had to pick one of the three, Brian Orakpo would be a nasty pass rusher across from Clay Matthews. These guys are unlikely to sign in Green Bay, but if the Packers throw a large contract at one of them, they might just have to accept it.
