TFC signs Argentine young DP Laba

Toronto FC has a new Designated Player.

On Friday, the club announced the official signing of midfielder Matias Laba, an Argentine who has spent the last three seasons with Argentine Primera Division side Argentinos Juniors.

During that spell the 21-year-old Laba played in 72 matches and even earned the captaincy. Due to his age he falls under Major League Soccer’s young DP distinction and will count for $200,000 against Toronto FC's salary cap, per league roster rules.

“We are really excited to have Matias join us. He is an exciting and energetic young player that’s captained his side and shown real leadership qualities,” Toronto FC Head Coach Ryan Nelsen said in a team statement. “He has a great intensity to his play that is infectious to watch and will be a great addition to the club.”

In addition to his club achievements, Laba represented Argentina at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia, playing in all five of his country’s matches.

“Matías Laba is one of the top young talents in Argentina and we are delighted to have him join Toronto FC,” Toronto FC president and general manager Kevin Payne said. “He is a modern central midfielder and we expect him to be a mainstay of our team for years to come.”
