Texas wins by comeback again 72-69 over Arlington

AP - Sports

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The Longhorns have made a habit of late comebacks this season, and Friday night's 72-69 victory over UT Arlington was yet another example.

Texas (6-1) trailed by as many nine points in the second half, but charged late with a 14-1 run to snag a 65-61 lead at the 4:54 mark. The Mavericks (2-6) played tough the rest of the way, but the Longhorns endured for their fourth second half comeback-victory of the season.

Demarcus Holland made the biggest play of the game when he ripped the ball away from Reger Dowell and charged down court for a two-handed dunk. It gave Texas a 70-69 lead with 1:03 left. He also had a career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.

The win moved the Longhorns to 9-0 in the all-time series against the Mavericks. Cameron Ridley recorded his third double-double of the year for the Longhorns with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mavericks' five road losses this season are their worst road start since 2002-03.

UTA had a chance to tie at the last second on a half-court shot from Stuart Lagerson, but it fell short.

Reger Dowell, who entered the game averaging 24.6 points per game, scored only 17 points on 6-of-20 shooting. The Mavericks had four players finish the game in double figures, including Brandon Edwards, who totaled 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Mavericks finished the game with 39 rebounds to the Longhorns' 38, becoming the first school to outrebound Texas this season.

The Mavericks outrebounded Texas 27-17 in the first half and connected on 6 of 15 3-point attempts to the Longhorns' 1-of-10. Dowell, Lonnie McClanahan and Jamel Outler each had 10 points for UTA at the intermission.

Texas' biggest problem in the first half came at the free throw line, converting on only 8 of 18 attempts.

The Longhorns were without their leading scorer, junior forward Jonathan Holmes. He missed the game due to a death in his family.
