Texas Tech announced Monday that three Red Raiders players will not play in Friday's Meineke Car Care Bowl against Minnesota because of team rule violations.
The nature of the rules violations was not revealed, football program spokesman Blayne Beal said.
Beal said starting defensive back Cornelius Douglas, linebacker Chris Payne and backup defensive tackle Leon Mackey will not play in the bowl game.
Texas Tech is 7-5, while Minnesota is 6-6. The Red Raiders will be led by interim head coach Chris Thomsen, who had been offensive line coach until now-former head coach Tommy Tuberville left the team three weeks ago to become head coach at Cincinnati.
However, Thomsen will return to his former position after Friday's bowl game as former Texas Tech standout quarterback Kliff Kingsbury has already been hired to replace Tuberville and will start his new role on Dec. 12.
