Jessica Eye won a split decision victory over Sarah Kaufman at UFC 166 on Oct. 19 at the Toyota Center in Houston. That is until Saturday, when word came out that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has changed the result to a “no decision,” according to Sherdog.com.
As with any split decision result, there is controversy about whether or not the judges got the call right. In this case, judges Ruben Najera and Jon Schrole had scored the fight 29-28 in Eye's favor, while Gino Garcia scored the bout 29-28 for Kaufman. (MMAWeekly.com had scored the bout 29-28 in Kaufman's favor at the time.)
The TDLR, however, three months later, has decided that the result wasn't the appropriate one. They notified Sherdog.com of the change of result in an email on Saturday morning, but had not yet responded to an MMAWeekly.com request for verification and reason for the change at the time of publication.
Kaufman quickly reacted on Twitter. Although she obviously would prefer a victory, she was pleased to not have her record reflect a loss in her UFC debut.
A BIG MORNING! Texas commission just overturned the result of me vs Eye to a No Decision! Not my win, but not an undeserved loss either…
— Sarah Kaufman (@mmasarah) February 1, 2014
Despite the positive turn of events for Kaufman, she said that she had nothing to do with the TDLR's decision to change the result. As of Saturday morning, neither her nor Eye had been contacted about the change of result.
“I had nothing to do with it being overturned. I just found out on the internet like everyone else,” Kaufman said on Saturday.
“I have no idea what went on with the Texas commission,” she continued. “I didn't file a single thing. I had nothing to do with the decision being overturned. It's the right one, but not at all my doing. No appeal on my end.”
Eye took the news in stride.
“My goodness. Never a dull moment in The Evil Eye's life,” Eye tweeted. “Thanks for support, this will be sorted out in due time. Still have new fight to win!”
Kaufman doesn't currently have her next bout scheduled yet, but Eye is slated to face Alexis Davis at UFC 170 on Feb. 22 in Las Vegas.
