COMMENTARY | When the Texas Rangers need a great pitcher, they can look to the minors, they can shop the league for a trade possibility or they can call the doctor.
The Rangers have the best pitching staff in the majors -- but it's on the disabled list.
Matt Harrison, Neftali Feliz, Alexi Ogando and Colby Lewis represent a combined 125 wins and 79 saves, from a Rookie of the Year (Feliz 2010) three All-Stars (Harrison, Feliz and Ogando) and the first Rangers pitcher to get a World Series win (Lewis). Toss in All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler, former Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria, and Justin Miller, the Rangers' Minor League Reliever of the Year in 2011, and the Rangers are a team with a significant injury issues.Colby Lewis - Flexor Tendon Surgery Lewis is finishing up his rehab assignment in Frisco and may rejoin the club in early June. His current status is listed as on the 15-day DL. Lewis received an anti-inflammatory injection May 13, but Dr. Keith Meister said it was unrelated to the surgery. On May 20, Lewis threw 47 pitches in 2 1/3 innings of work, giving up four hits and two runs.
Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tweeted that Lewis doesn't think he has the arm strength or the velocity yet to get outs against big-league hitters.
Alexi Ogando -- Right Biceps Tendonitis
After a strong start against the Athletics on May 15, Ogando reported unusual soreness and was placed on the 15-day DL the next morning. An MRI showed no structural damage, and he is eligible to return after May 31.
Ian Kinsler -- Strained Intercostal MuscleKinsler strained the muscles surrounding his right ribcage on a particularly ugly slide into third May 16. He missed two starts before being added to the DL retroactively; his return is scheduled for June 2.
Joakim Soria -- Tommy John SurgeryLate-May was the expected time frame for Soria to return, but that's been complicated by a strained right pectoral muscle. General manager Jon Daniels now says that return could now be "more like July 1."
Matt Harrison -- Herniated DiskAfter initially being placed on the 15-day DL with a stiff lower back, Harrison's fortunes have steadily declined. Two injections failed to relieve the soreness, and Harrison underwent surgery for the herniated disk April 23. A second surgery was required on May 1. The Rangers still hope their opening-day starter will take the mound again this season, but his return has been slipped from "after the All-Star game" to August.
Neftali Feliz -- Tommy John SurgeryStill on a rehab assignment, Feliz's return is labeled as progressing, but he's not throwing off a mound yet. Expectations are that he may return to the club late in the season.
Justin Miller -- Right Elbow SurgeryMiller was recalled from AA Frisco and placed on the 60-day DL on April 11.
Colin Holmes has followed the Rangers through 19 managers, 11 general managers, six owners, 25 different opening day pitchers, two stadiums and two World Series appearances. He patiently waits for a win in the last game of the year.
