Texans' Reed had hip surgery

The SportsXchange

Ed Reed's first offseason with the Houston Texans won't begin until late July after the 34-year-old safety underwent surgery for a torn labrum in his hip last week.

The Houston Chronicle reported Friday that Reed has been ruled out for organized team activities and the Texans' three-day minicamp in June. Whether he can be on the field in an unlimited capacity by the open of training camp on July 31 won't be known until Reed begins rehabilitating his hip.

"It's just something we'll have to work through," coach Gary Kubiak said.

The Texans signed Reed, who spent the first 11 years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens, to a three-year, $15 million contract last month.

As possible insurance, the Texans drafted free safety DJ Swearinger in the second round of last weekend's draft. Houston lost 2012 starter Glover Quin to the Detroit Lions in free agency.
