The former first-round draft pick was going to count just more than $8 million against the team’s salary cap this season, and depending on how the Cowboys made the move they will create $4 million or $6 million in cap room, according to ESPN Dallas.
The Cowboys also released kicker David Buehler. He was due to earn $1.26 million this season.
Newman was the big move though and it didn’t come as a surprise because owner Jerry Jones had publicly discussed a slip in play. The 33-year-old was a solid player for a long time but he’s no longer an elite cover man and Dallas is looking to boost its secondary in free agency.
