Tennessee Titans Sign Zach Clayton, Six More to Practice Squad: Local Fan’s Take

The Tennessee Titans surprised some followers when they released Zach Clayton on August 31, 2012. The Titans were comfortable with the five defensive tackles who were already on their roster. Those players were Jurrell Casey, Karl Klug, Mike Martin, Sen'Derrick Marks and DaJohn Harris. Harris made the team as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Southern California (USC).

The Titans released Clayton. That doesn't mean that they're done with him. One day later, the Titans re-signed Clayton to their practice squad. Clayton was one of five players who re-joined the practice squad on September 1.

As of September 3, the Titans have filled seven of eight positions on their practice squad. Five of the seven players are offensive skill-position players. Here's a brief rundown of their practice squad.

Two Newcomers

On September 3, the Titans welcomed two newcomers to their franchise. Vidal Hazelton and Darren Evans were both placed on the practice squad. Both players were undrafted free agents in 2011.

At 6-foot-0 and 232 pounds, Evans is a running back who spent time on the Indianapolis Colts' active roster in 2011. Through four preseason games, Evans had 24 carries for 58 rushing yards. He had a long run of seven yards. Evans is basically replacing Herb Donaldson.

Hazelton is replacing James Kirkendoll's spot on the practice squad. At 6-foot-2 and 209 pounds, Hazelton barely made an impact during the preseason. Through four preseason games, he had three receptions for 23 yards.

Summary

Colin Mooney and Clayton have the best chances for a promotion to the active roster. If the Titans needed to make room for any free-agent acquisitions, then I could see Quinn Johnson getting released. I don't think they need to keep a fullback on their active roster and the practice squad. Commit to one or the other.

The only other thing I noticed was that the Titans kept Brandon Barden over Cameron Graham. That was interesting. During the preseason, Graham had a touchdown reception. Barden didn't make an impact because he was injured. The Titans must've liked what they saw from him before that.

The Titans have room for one more participant on the practice squad. An interior offensive lineman, perhaps?
