Tennessee Titans Release Zach Clayton, Roster Down to 53 Players: Local Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

The Tennessee Titans have trimmed their roster down to 53 players as of August 31, 2012. The Titans released Zach Clayton and Chris Hawkins. They're keeping five running backs for their Week 1 game. The Titans will host the New England Patriots on September 9.

Here are some observations on a few players who were on the edge. A complete roster is included.

Released: Zach Clayton

Zach Clayton was the most-recognizable name on the Titans' cut-down list. The Titans drafted Clayton in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Clayton had three tackles in 2011. He wouldn't have played much in 2012.

The Titans already have four defensive tackles who were ahead of him on the depth chart. Those players are Karl Klug, Jurrell Casey, Mike Martin and Sen'Derrick Marks. The Titans also kept DaJohn Harris. He has more potential than Clayton.

Survived: Al Afalava

Al Afalava beat out Aaron Francisco for the No. 4 safety job. During the preseason, Afalava had six tackles with three pass deflections. Don't be surprised if Afalava is released when Markelle Martin returns from the physically-unable-to-perform list (PUP) in Week 7.

Released: Chris Hawkins

The Titans have five cornerbacks with Jason McCourty, Alterraun Verner, Tommie Campbell, Coty Sensabaugh and Ryan Mouton. They could use a veteran cornerback for depth. Chris Hawkins was expendable.

Survived: Quinn Johnson, Jamie Harper

The Titans kept five running backs on their roster. Jamie Harper and Quinn Johnson both survived.

Kenny Britt Will Be On Suspended List For Week 1

Britt doesn't count against the 53-man roster. For Britt to return, the Titans must release another player (or add someone to injured reserve). Troy Kropog or Quinn Johnson could be released after Week 1.
