The Tennessee Titans have announced their five team captains for the 2012-13 NFL season. Titans head coach Mike Munchak has confirmed these selections. He made the following comment about his captains.
"It shouldn't matter how much money you make or how many years you've been in the league or what you've accomplished. It's more about what you mean to that team, and if we're having struggles or we need someone to turn to, whose that guy that you trust the most on the roster and who would you want to be there for you if need be."
Offense Captain: Jake Locker (QB)
On September 9, Jake Locker will make his NFL debut as a starting quarterback. However, the players already had enough confidence to name Locker one of two team captains on offense. During training camp, Locker defeated Matt Hasselbeck for the starting quarterback job. Hasselbeck was a team captain in 2011.
Offense Captain: Steve Hutchinson (OL)
The Titans signed Steve Hutchinson this past offseason. Hutchinson replaces Jake Scott, who became a free agent. The 34-year-old Hutchinson is a seven-time Pro Bowler who will add stability to the interior of the offensive line. Hutchinson joins Fernando Velasco as one of two new offensive line starters from one season ago.
Defense Captain: Colin McCarthy (LB)
Late in 2011, Colin McCarthy replaced Barrett Ruud as the starting middle linebacker. The Titans were confident enough to commit to him as a starter in 2012. They displayed this commitment when they released Ruud. After an impressive preseason, the Titans are ready to honor their second-year linebacker as a team captain.
Defense Captain: Jason McCourty (CB)
During training camp, the Titans signed Jason McCourty to a five-year extension. McCourty joins McCarthy as young captains on an even younger defense.Special Teams Captain: Tim Shaw (LB)
For the second consecutive season, Tim Shaw will serve as the special teams captain. Shaw was the captain for one of the NFL's best-overall units in 2011.
Local Fan's Take
I'm somewhat surprised with the team captains on offense. It's interesting to see Locker recognized as a team captain before he has even started his first regular-season game. While Hutchinson is the most-experienced offensive linemen on this roster, this is his first season with the organization. David Stewart and Michael Roos have each been with the organization since 2005. Nate Washington would've also been a good choice.
But does it matter? Not really. Each of the five captains are high-quality characters who will do a fantastic job. These are the players who were supposedly chosen by their peers. That says a lot about their confidence in McCarthy and Locker.
How do players feel about these honors? Cortland Finnegan was a team captain in 2011. This was Finnegan's response to when he was recognized as a captain:
"This has been my greatest accomplishment and achievement so far, and that comes with a lot. I don't want to let these guys down."
Good luck to all of them.
