The Tennessee Titans completed their 2012 NFL preseason with a 10-6 victory over the New Orleans Saints on August 30, 2012. Both teams had their fair share of starting players who didn't suit up. The preseason finale is for those players who are on the edge of making the roster. It's also for players who are trying to latch onto other teams.
Here were some observations from that contest
Jake Locker played for most of the first half. Locker completed 9-of-16 passes for 81 yards. He lost a fumble when he was scrambling inside the goal-line. He continued to sail some throws. Locker was making better passes in the screen game; he wasn't chucking them to his running back.
The Titans have some difficult decisions to make with their defensive line. Keyunta Dawson has made his case throughout the preseason. Dawson had four tackles with two sacks and two tackles for losses (TFL). Through four preseason games and one start, Dawson had three sacks and a pass deflection.
Pannel Egboh, Scott Solomon and Zach Clayton are amongst the other defensive linemen who are fighting for a roster spot. Dawson had the most production. However, he wasn't supposed to be more than a training camp body. Could he join Darius Reynaud as surprise players to make the 53-man roster?
The Titans already have their top-four linebackers with Colin McCarthy, Akeem Ayers, Will Witherspoon and Zach Brown. However, Tim Shaw looked like he could be relied upon for more than special teams. Shaw had 15 tackles with an interception.
Coty Sensabaugh and Tommie Campbell both had solid performances. Sensabaugh had seven tackles with a pass deflection. Campbell had six tackles with an interception. The Titans need their depth cornerbacks to perform well when they're trying to contain the New England Patriots' spread-formation sets. Tom Brady is very good at dissecting defenses who have vulnerabilities in their secondary.
The Titans finished the preseason with a 3-1 record. They've won three consecutive games since they lost to the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks had a 4-0 record.
The offense is a concern. If Locker can't complete more of his passes, then the Titans will become too dependent on big plays for their offensive production. They also need more production from their running backs.
The Titans will have Kenny Britt for their Week 2 game against the San Diego Chargers on September 16.
The Titans must trim their roster to 53 players by 8:00 p.m. (Central Time) on August 31. They'll host their Week 1 game against the New England Patriots on September 9.
