VANCOUVER, B.C. – Russell Teibert scored his first two MLS goals on Saturday at BC Place as the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the LA Galaxy 3-1 in front of 21,000 fans. Follow GOAL.COM CANADA on Twitter
The Niagara Falls native scored his brace in front of his parents and sister, who were in town, but had Japanese midfielder Daigo Kobayashi not gone down holding his ankle in the 14th minute, the 20 year old might not have had a chance to make his ultimately game-deciding impact.
“I always want to play in front of my family,” Teibert said. “So, I think it’s something special, for not only for them, but for myself, to be able to play in front of them tonight.”
Something special indeed. Playing in a more advanced role as part of an attacking three, Teibert sent several dangerous crosses into the box and pushed forward himself time and again.
On one such rush in the 63rd minute, he took a pass from Nigel Reo-Coker and cut in on his left, before picking the bottom left corner of Carlo Cudicini’s goal.
He then followed that up 13 minutes later by making a gut-busting run into the box and finishing an opportunity teed up by Gershon Koffie, who beat his man near the endline before putting the ball into Teibert’s path.
“Adding goals to his performances is something we’ve talked about and something that we want to see from him,” head coach Martin Rennie said. “He took his goals very well today and I’m very pleased for him.”
This victory ends a seven-game winless run in league play for the ‘Caps, and now the team is hoping this win provides a boost ahead of the Canadian Championship final against the Montreal Impact, the first leg of which takes place at Stade Saputo on Wednesday.
“The lads have to take a lot of confidence and belief from that,” Reo-Coker said. “To beat the league champions at home, convincingly, as well, you have to take confidence from that.
“Now we have to use that as momentum to be a season changer for us and continue to grow as a team and try and achieve what we want to achieve this year.”
