Team USA Men's Basketball
You know Team USA is loaded when Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade drop out only to have a roster that still includes Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Chris Paul. However, the New Orleans Hornets will not be represented on Team USA as Anthony Davis and Eric Gordon were cut.
Had he not been injured, I believe Anthony Davis would have made the Team USA final roster. On the selection show, Team USA Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski said it was difficult selecting Davis when he couldn't really practice. I would love to have seen Anthony Davis represent the Hornets on Team USA, but I'm not heartbroken over this.
There are conspiracy theorists in New Orleans suggesting that Anthony Davis is not injured. They believe the Hornets may be protecting Davis, their top asset, before he ever plays a game for New Orleans. I wouldn't go so far as to suggest this, but I will say that Team USA will be just fine without Anthony Davis whereas the Hornets wouldn't be.
Whether he ends up playing for the Phoenix Suns or the New Orleans Hornets, the injury-prone Eric Gordon doesn't need to play for Team USA in the Summer Olympics. However, I believe Gordon would have been a better selection than James Harden. But at least we won't have to hear press conferences like this in London.
Reporter: "Can you talk about that three-pointer you hit at the end of the first half?"
Gordon: "I'd rather be in Phoenix."
Reporter: "You only played 10 minutes today. Would you like more playing time?"
Gordon: "I didn't want New Orleans to match my contract with the Suns."
Reporter: "After winning today's game 100-40, do you think anyone will challenge Team USA?"
Gordon: "Why did the Hornets draft Austin Rivers? He's a two-guard like me!"
I don't follow the Memphis Grizzlies like I do the New Orleans Hornets, but like Eric Gordon, I feel Rudy Gay would have been better than another selection. Gay is a more dynamic scorer than Andre Iguodala, plus he's three years younger. But the Hornets and Grizzlies were left off the Team USA final roster.
Should a Team USA player get injured, Anthony Davis, Eric Gordon and Rudy Gay will be the alternates to take his place. Therefore, Hornets' and Grizzlies' fans could still be cheering for one of their own in London. It remains to be seen if the Phoenix Suns have representation on Team USA.
