TCU wide receiver KaVontae Turpin won’t be taking part in any of TCU’s spring practices.

Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson said Friday that one of his team’s top offensive threats needed to focus on his academics. And Turpin’s return to the team doesn’t sound like a definite.

“Turp needs to get where he needs to get academically and do some other things,” Patterson said via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “We’re going through a learning experience. He’s got an opportunity to be back here in the fall. But right now, he’s going to class and doing the things he needs to do, get bigger and stronger. We’re doing it like we’re not going to have him, and then if he does make it back, it’s a positive.”

Turpin missed five games in 2016 and had 30 catches for 295 yards. In 2015, with Trevone Boykin at quarterback, Turpin had 45 catches for 649 yards and eight scores. He scored just one touchdown in 2016 and nearly half of his offensive production came in one game. In TCU’s week 2 loss to Arkansas, Turpin had seven catches for 126 yards. That means Turpin was held to 23 catches for 169 yards the rest of his season.

Along with Turpin, Patterson said linebacker Travin Howard would miss spring practice too. Howard, who had 130 total tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2016, is rehabbing from offseason surgery.
