Syracuse announced Saturday that senior forward James Southerland is being benched indefinitely for an unspecified eligibility matter.
"Due to an eligibility matter, senior James Southerland will not participate in competition until further notice," the school said in a statement. "Given university policy and federal student privacy laws, we are unable to provide any further details at this time."
Southerland is second on the team in scoring with 13.6 points and fourth in rebounding at 5.2 per game.
Last season, Syracuse made a similar move with center Fab Melo. The 7-footer was suspended for the NCAA Tournament. He also missed three regular season games for an academic issue. Melo left Syracuse after the season and was taken in the first round of the NBA draft by the Boston Celtics (No. 22 overall). He plays for the Celtics' NBA D-League affiliate in Maine.
