Are you headed to Long Island, New York? If so, don't forget to pack your surfboard. There are several great places located in the area where you can go surfing, stand-up paddleboarding or windsurfing. Here's a quick rundown on a handful of them:
Ditch Plains Beach
Ditch Plains Beach is located in Suffolk County. Many folks consider it to be the best surf spot in the area. The beach also extends to the famed Rheinstein Estate Park's cliff formations and Shadmoor Park. There are beach access roads located off of Ditch Plains Road. An East Hampton Town permit is traditionally needed to park in the town's beach lot. The permit fees tend to be steep. One way to avoid having to get a parking permit is to book at room at one of the area's lodging establishments. Many include beach passes as part of their overnight packages.
Lifeguards, restrooms, showers and a great surf shop are also located in the area. The best place in the area to buy or rent surf gear is Espo's Surf and Sport. It is also a super place to pick up advice or sign up for the shop's annual surfing contest. The store is located on Montauk Highway. If you get hungry in between surf sessions, the Ditch Witch is the best place to go.
Robert Moses State Park
Robert Moses State Park is located in Suffolk County. It features roughly five miles of beach, picnic areas and a seasonal showering area. Stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and surfing are allowed within the confines of the park. The beach is broken up into four sections. The eastern most sections tend to see the most waves. Surfers should be prepared to remit an $8 to $10 vehicle entrance fee. The fee varies based on the season. There are no locker rentals available on premise. During the summer months, the park traditionally opens daily.
Hither Hills State Park
Hither Hills State Park is located in Suffolk County. It features a beach area with a left-hand point break. The park also has walking dunes, showers, fireplaces and picnic areas. Refreshments and overnight accommodations are also available onsite. The park opens daily at dawn and closes at dusk. Surfing, stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing are permissible. In order to access the park, the remittance of a $10 vehicle entrance fee is required.
Jones Beach State Park
Jones Beach State Park is located in Nassau County. It features 6.5 miles of beach, a boardwalk, bathhouses and concession stands. There is an $8 to $10 vehicle entrance fee to contend with as well as a $1 per person bathhouse use fee. Locker rentals are also available onsite. Locker fees start at $6 and include a $5 key deposit. Surfers should avoid high tide periods and head towards the Gilgo area. It tends to produce the most consistent waves. The park opens daily. The bathhouses' hours of operation vary based on the season.
