Surfers Gear Up for International Surfing Day Events

Surfers around the world are gearing up for International Surfing Day, which falls on June 20, 2012. It is just one of many outdoor related, sports holidays taking place this month. Others include Go Skateboarding Day and Get Outdoors Day. In honor of the holiday, a series of surfing events are scheduled to take place all across the world. Here's a quick rundown on a few of the ones scheduled to take place in Georgia and Northeast Florida:

International Surfing Day Events in Georgia

The Surfrider Foundation's Atlanta Chapter is hosting a stand up paddleboarding event on June 23, 2012 at the Lake Lanier Islands Resort in Buford, Georgia. It is part of the SUP Splash Race Series and there is a $45 entry fee involved. For those of you that have never been to Buford, you are in for a real treat. Lake Lanier is an amazing and popular place for water activities of all types. Therefore, I'd strongly recommend that those interested in attending the event reserve their spot as soon as possible.

The Surfrider Foundation's Low Country Chapter is also allegedly working on planning a surfing event for June 20, 2012. It is scheduled to take place on Georgia's Tybee Island. If you ask me, Tybee Island is another stunning Georgia locale. However, full details about the event have yet to be released. Therefore, I'd suggest that surfers contact the chapter directly for an update. For those that have never been to Tybee Island, there are several businesses there that cater to surfers. Among them are the High Tide Surf Shop, East Coast Paddleboarding and the North Island Surf and Kayak. I would recommend all three to anyone in need of surf lessons, board rentals or surfing supplies.

International Surfing Day Events in Northeast Florida

Even though it is scheduled to go down before International Surfing Day, the Florida Surfing Association is holding a wonderful event for groms at Jacksonville Beach on June 16, 2012. It is called the Super Grom Surf Fest and it is slated to take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Admission to the event is free but advance registration is required. Personally, I wouldn't wait too long to sign up because space is limited. Surfers visiting the area for the first time may want to stop by one of the many great surf shops located in the area. The Sunrise Surf Shop and Clean Ocean Surfboards are just two of the shops worth mentioning.

In addition, the Surfrider Foundation's First Coast Chapter is expected to host a surfing and beach clean-up event on June 20, 2012 at Jacksonville Beach. Details of the event are still being hammered out, so those interested in participating should contact the chapter direct. At this point, a surfing session is part of the agenda and surfers are expected to meet in the 16th Avenue South parking lot at 6 p.m.
