17 year old pro surfer Lakey "Laker" Peterson let her humanitarian side show recently by once again teaming up with Hands 4 Others. As part of the joint venture, the uber talented teen is donating her star power and surfing skills to help Indonesians obtain clean water. I, for one, am impressed with her charitable efforts. Here are a few more details:
About the Charity
Hands 4 Others is a non-profit organization that seeks to provide 500 villages across the globe with potable water by 2012. To date, the organization has assisted villages in such places as Haiti, Uganda, Pakistan, Kenya and Honduras. It has chapters in California, Colorado and Alabama.
Surf 4 Water Campaign
Peterson is helping to launch the organizations' Surf 4 Water Campaign. The Surf 4 Water Campaign's mission is to provide potable water for a half dozen villages in Rote, Indonesia. Rote is an island that is well known for its excellent surfing and warm hospitality.
In order to help the organization achieve its goal, Peterson has pledged to hold a private surfing lesson for the first 10 people that donate $1,000 each to the organization. The surfing lesson is expected to take place on Friday, July 20, 2012, from 9 a.m. until noon, at an undisclosed location in Santa Barbara, California. In addition to the private surfing lesson, the donors will get to dine with Peterson as well as receive souvenir t-shirts, a water bottle and a photo opportunity.
The private surfing lesson in Santa Barbara is not all that the talented surfer has planned. She is also expected to give away autographed items and meet up with a select fundraiser in Rote the week of Monday, August 6, 2012. Peterson is slated to be in Rote filming a surf documentary at that time. The surf fan that raises the most amount of money during the Surf 4 Water Campaign will get to travel to Rote and spend several days at the Waterway Surf Resort. While there, that surf fan will also get to meet with Peterson and participate in a film shoot. Surf fans that would like to learn more about the Surf 4 Water Campaign and Peterson's participation in it should log onto the Hands 4 Others' website.
Peterson's Other Charitable Works
I should also note that Peterson's latest endeavor is not the first time that she has done charitable work with Hands 4 Others. She previously raised $15,000 for the organization in conjunction with the release of the Nike film, "Leave a Message." It also isn't the only organization that Peterson has lent her talents to. She has done work with the Cousteau Society and the Student Conservation Association as well. In my opinion, her phenomenal surfing skills combined with her humanitarian efforts makes her someone to keep an eye on. Surf fans can read all about Peterson's latest endeavors on her website.
Killeen Gonzalez enjoys water sports with her family. She has a history of interviewing pro surfers.
