The high school sports year is winding down in schools across Long Island, but there's plenty of programs being offered in the summer months for student-athletes to keep their skills sharp.
Here's a look at the top summer sports programs for student-athletes in Nassau County, Long Island:
High school age boys and girls who are looking to keep their soccer skills sharp through the summer months can compete in the Town of Hempstead summer soccer league.
The games, which begin the first week in July, will be played on weekday evenings at 6 p.m. at North Wantagh Park in Wantagh, NY. Fees are $225 for Town of Hempstead-based teams, and $250 for non-Town of Hempstead teams.
Boys and girls lacrosse leagues are also being formed by the Town of Hempstead, as high school and middle school students are encouraged to join.
According to the toh.li website, games will be played at Town Park Point Lookout (1300 Lido Boulevard) weekday evenings at 6 PM, beginning the last week of June. Fees are the same as the soccer program.
There are men's basketball and softball leagues being formed, but the softball program being offered for high school girls is one of the best in the county. Unfortunately, unlike the aforementioned programs, this one is only open to Town of Hempstead residents.
The games, which begin July 9, are played Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM at Baldwin Park in Baldwin and Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore. The Levittown Athletic Club also has a fastpitch softball program that features games over the summer.
TOHLA is one of Long Island's best instructional lacrosse programs, as it's staffed by some of the top high school and college players and coaches from the Long Island region.
This is a fantastic program because young lacrosse players have the opportunity to receive expert, one-on-one instruction on lacrosse fundamentals and strategies.
