MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Striker Luis Suarez scored twice in his first Premier League game in five months after serving a suspension for biting, and Liverpool beat last-place Sunderland 3-1 on Sunday to climb to second in the standings.

Daniel Sturridge put Liverpool ahead in the 28th minute before setting up both goals for Suarez.

Italy forward Emanuele Giaccherini scored for Sunderland, which has one point in six games.

Norwich beat Stoke 1-0 in Sunday's other match, with Jonny Howson scoring the winner from long range in the 34th minute to secure his team's second victory of the season.


MILAN (AP) - Juventus won 1-0 at rival Torino on Sunday.

Inter tied 1-1 at Cagliari, while Sassuolo picked up a second point, coming from two goals down to tie 2-2 against high-flying Lazio.

Elsewhere, striker German Denis scored two goals against former club Udinese in Atlanta's 2-0 win. Also, Catania beat Chievo Verona 2-0, and Hellas Verona defeated Livorno 2-1.


BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Elche beat Celta Vigo 1-0 on Javi Marquez's goal to claim its first win in Spain's top flight in 25 years, while Levante's late goal gave it a 1-0 victory at Osasuna on Sunday.

Elche earned promotion last season, making its long-awaited return to the first division, where it had gone winless through six games.

Levante looked ready to settle for a tie in Pamplona when midfielder Jordi Xumetra scored in the 87th minute after a penalty. Osasuna goalkeeper Andres Fernandez blocked Papakouly Diop's kick, but Xumetra raced in to score on the rebound.


BERLIN (AP) - Japan midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake scored one goal and set up another Sunday as Nuremberg twice came from behind to earn a 3-3 tie at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.

Eintracht Braunschweig is still waiting for its first win since returning to the Bundesliga after 28 years following a 4-0 home loss to Stuttgart.


PARIS (AP) - Newly promoted Nantes won 3-1 at Rennes to move above its opponent in the top half of the French league Sunday.

Montpellier was held to a fifth straight tie, 1-1 against Ajaccio in Corsica in a match in which both teams finished with 10 men.
